    Baking up a Crave-O-Licious Collaboration!

    Baking up a Crave-O-Licious Collaboration!

We are always on the lookout for potential collaborations, but this one definitely tops the cake – literally! When Crave approached us to discuss the idea of doing a collaboration, we were 100% on board. Not only do we love their cupcakes, but they have been amazing long term supporters of our small business by inviting us to host a pop-up shop at their Kensington location during the fathers day weekend last year. The entrepreneurial spirit runs deep within their bakery and they are as passionate about delicious cupcakes, as we are for mismatched socks.

As a result, the partnership made a lot of sense, on both ends. We figured it would produce a product that would match the inherent desire to bring happiness and value to our customers, which is something both businesses strive for. Plus, how cool is it to say you own a pair of mismatched cupcake socks?

The initial meeting was hugely about brainstorming the perfect design and coming up with a concept that complimented both brands. We decided to use Crave’s two signature cupcakes, Crave-O-Licious with chocolate sprinkles on one sock and Princess Chocolate on the other. In order to complete the design, we inverted the colours of the heels and the toes on each sock with the colours of the icing. We then decided to have ‘Crave Cupcakes’ knitted on the bottom of the Crave-O-Licious sock and ‘Friday Sock Co’ on the Princess Chocolate sock.

For those of you who don’t know:

Crave-O-Licious: is a chocolate cake with a blue vanilla buttercream icing, sprinkled with shaved chocolate.

Princess Chocolate: is a chocolate cake with strawberry infused buttercream icing, sprinkled with clear sparkles.

If you have never tried either of these flavours or one of Crave’s cupcakes at all, then we highly suggest you do; they’re slightly addictive.

We had so much fun doing this collaboration, as it was terribly delicious (there may have been a cupcake or two consumed in the process) and working with the Crave team could not have been more flawless and fun!

Sock sizing is 5-10 women’s, 4-8 Men’s. The socks will be available at all the Crave Cupcake locations, as well as on our online shop!

    The Wood Shop

    The Wood Shop

I was very lucky growing up to always have access to a wood shop. My Dad owned a small construction company, so as a kid, I was always sawing and sanding wood bits to make all kinds of things. Thankfully after he retired he kept a small shop for little projects. This allowed Friday Sock Co. to build our very own retail displays. The most recent design was a wooden spinner that we called The Rooster.

To build it I used a Cedar 4x4 cut to size, some carriage bolts, flanged inserts, wood glue, and a couple other stock retail display parts. For tools I use a chop saw, table saw, drill press, jig, and a belt sander. Before assembly I sprayed everything with a satin urethane.  The whole process for a display took a little over an hour without factoring in the time it took to get materials etc.

As the company grew in 2016, I realized I would no longer able to devote the time needed to build anymore Roosters. It’s one of those things that i’d love to keep doing, but just can’t manage the time it takes. It’s going to be a challenge to find another display option that is quite as unique, but i’m up for the challenge! Onwards and upwards. With that said, I will miss the smell of sawdust.

    Combed Cotton

    Combed Cotton

Friday Sock Co socks are made with Egyptian Combed Cotton, which may leave you asking yourself... what is this word "Combed" all about? Well the short answer is this - Combed Cotton is a super soft version of regular cotton. Pretty simple right? But how does it get it's super softness? For the answer to that question, please see below.

In the typical milling process cotton is picked, cleaned, and the fibers are separated. The technical name for the separation process is called carding, but we don't need to get into all of that. Once the fibers are lined up in roughly the same direction, it is then spun into thread.

With Combed Cotton the process is the same, except this time around it's combed. Think of it like a fine brush that takes out impurities and shorter strands leaving behind the good stuff; long, straight fibers. Through the combing process about 10-20% of the volume is removed leaving behind the best of the crop.

Because of this process combed cotton becomes much softer. This is due to the lack of short prickly fibers sticking out and also the removal of dirt and impurities. But wait there's more! It's also stronger! This is because combing makes the long fibers lie closely together, and the bits of short breakable fibers are removed.

So there you have it. Now you know!
